Kavish Kantasingh of Combined College Campuses (CCC) turned in an impressive spell of spin bowling to restrict Jamaica to a second innings total of 164 and an overall lead of 205, leaving his team with a gettable 206 for victory when the third day’s play in the 5th round of the 2010 Regional 4 day cricket tournament continued at the Providence Stadium last evening.
At the close of play the CCC had progressed to 115-4 needing just 91 to pull off a come from behind victory with 6 wickets intact.
Singh bowled 24 tireless overs including 5 maidens and conceded 53 runs for 4 wickets. Gavin Wallace supported admirably with 5.5 overs, 1 maiden, 3 wickets for 15 runs. The other successful bowler, Kevin McClean, snared 2 wickets for 28 runs from 7 overs that included 1 maiden.
Captain of the CCC, Floyd Reifer finally found some form to post an unbeaten 25 runs (3×4) and was looking ominous when stumps were drawn.
Singh trapped Tamar Lambert, LBW for 23 (3×4 1×6) to add to the overnight scalp of Danza Hyatt. He then induced Nkrumah Bonner to a loose shot that flew into the hands of Floyd Reifer at first slip shortly before removing Carlton Baugh, LBW to leave the Jamaicans on 135-6.
The Jamaicans were never allowed to settle due to some sharp fielding by the CCC, none more spectacular than Romel Currency’s pinpoint throw from cover that caught Pagan well short of his mark after that batsman had driven Gavin Wallace and took off for a sharp single. Currency’s scooped up the ball and threw down the stumps with Pagan well short of the mark. The Jamaicans were then 143-7. At that point Pagan had registered a half century and was looking threatening. He struck 6 fours in an entertaining knock of 52.
Bevon Brown was dismissed cheaply ((2) and the score was 148-2 with the recognized batsmen all back in the pavilion. Odeen Brown then entered and scored a quick fire 10 from 16 deliveries that included a lofty six. He then fell, caught and bowled to Gavin Wallace who closed off the Jamaican’s innings which lasted 49.4 overs.
Omar Phillips and Jamal Smith opened for the CCC and took their team to the break without mishap. Phillips was on 26 (2×4) while Smith had notched up 21 (2×4) and the score then was 49-0.
Brown made the breakthrough shortly after resumption when he deceived Smith with a quicker ball that sent his stumps scattering all over the place. Phillips followed shortly afterwards, caught behind off the bowling of Lambert without adding to his total. Lambert also picked up Kyle Corbin who scored 2 from 6 deliveries.
The burly Jamaican finished with figures of 16-6-18-3. Brown, who had wrecked the CCC in the first innings taking 8-54 was only able to pick up Kejon Ottley, caught the wicketkeeper.
Earlier, Jamaica resuming on their overnight total of 37-2 lost Andrew Richardson, caught at first slip off Kevin McClean for 3. Kantasingh then trapped Lambert (23), Bonner also fell to Kantasingh, while Baugh went, also LBW to Kantasingh.
Bevon Brown was then dismissed LBW to a well pitched up ball from Gavin Wallace. Brown and Dawes valiantly attempted to push the score but Gavin Wallace removed him, caught and bowled to leave the match interestingly poised for a great finish today.
