Khan defeats Meusa to tighten grip on Trophy Stall Chess Tournament
Former National Junior Chess champion Taffin Khan retained his rich vein of form when he ended the fifth round with a win over National Men’s Senior chess champion, Wendell Muesa to retain the lead when play in the Trophy Stall Chess Tournament continued at the Keishar’s Sports Club on Tuesday and Thursday evening last.
The points standing after five rounds reads: Taffin Khan (5), Errol Tiwari (4) Wendell Meusa and Irshad Mohamed (3 1/2 each), Brian Thompson and Shiv Nandalall (3 points apiece), Loris Nathoo (2 1/2), Chino Chung, Dennis Dillon, Ryan Singh and Nowrattan Persaud (2 points each), Carlos Allicock and Michael Pereira (1 1/2 each).
Earlier in the tournament, Khan and Brian Thompson were locked on 3 points apiece with Khan assuming the lead by dint of the Median Buchholz method which establishes the leader after a series of complicated mathematics. Khan broke the deadlock with a fourth round victory over Thompson on Tuesday evening last to assume the lead.
In another keen tussle for honours, Shiv Nandalall played himself into an excellent position to take the game against Errol Tiwari but failed to capitalize after the veteran Tiwari utilized his vast experience in the end game to secure the win. Irshad Mohamed then squeezed past Chino Chung while National Champion, Wendell Muesa notched up another victory. Nowrattan Persaud and Dennis Dillon were also in the winners’ row while Loris Nathoo and Michael Pereira played to an exciting stalemate. When play resumed on Thursday Meusa and Khan faced off in one of the most anticipated match-up. Khan mastered the board and dominated Meusa to secure the vital point.
Tiwari then employed years of experience in the end game to overcome Brian Thompson while Irshad Mohamed secured a win over Carlos Allicock. Shiv Nandalall then rebounded to earn a well fought victory over Chino Chung. Loris Nathoo and Dennis Dillon secured wins over Nowrattan Persaud and Michael Pereira respectively. The Tournament continues this morning at the Keishar’s Sports Club from 10:00hrs with players vying for honours in both categories. The tournament is sponsored by The Trophy Stall of Bourda Market.
