First Test Player to emerge from village
Albion’s first Test player and the ninth player from the Ancient County of Berbice to play Test Cricket Sew Shivnarine was honoured on Saturday last for his contribution to the sport.
The main pavilion at the Albion Community Centre Ground was renamed the Sew Shivnarine Pavilion during a simple but impressive ceremony which was attended by the Honorable Minister of Culture Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony, Minister of Health Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, Presidential Advisor Dr. Navin Chanderpaul, Director of Sports Neil Kumar, Regional Director of Guysuco Jairam Petam among other dignitaries as well as overseas based Guyanese and cricket fans.
The Ceremony was organised by Guysuco, Berbice Cricket Board, overseas based friends and supporters of the former West Indies all-rounder.
Ministers Anthony and Ramsammy described Shivnarine as a cricketing hero and role model while expressing their delight that he was being honoured since his contribution was outstanding during his career. Dr. Anthony called on young cricketers present to emulate players like Shivnarine and to follow his theme of hard work, discipline and commitment.
Dr. Ramsammy recalled playing cricket with the former all-rounder and hailed the organisation for organising the event to recognize his friend’s contribution to the game. Dr. Chanderpaul said the burly Shivnarine was a fine gentleman on and off the cricket field and expressed the hope that the USA based former Test Star would one day be involved in molding talents in his hometown.
Kumar, who described Shivnarine as a personal friend, recalled his test debut versus Australia in 1978 at the once World Famous GCC Ground Bourda where he scored two half centuries.
Treasurer of the Berbice Cricket Board Anil Beharry who spoke on the Board’s behalf recognized the contribution of the former Berbice all-rounder and described him as a trail blazer.
As the first Test cricketer from Albion, Shivnarine led the way for Narsingh Deonarine and Sewnarine Chattergoon to follow.
Regional Director of Guysuco Jairam Petam stated that Guysuco was indeed honoured to be part of the ceremony to recognize a son of the soil, a Berbice Cricketing hero.
In an emotional response to the numerous speeches, Shivnarine said that he was grateful and humbled to be honoured.
He traced back his career which took him from the small village of Albion to the highest level, Test cricket.
Shivnarine expressed gratitude to all who guided and assisted him during his career and noted that to play Test cricket was a dream come true for a little boy who dared to dream.
Shivnarine expressed gratitude to his home club, Guysuco, the Berbice Cricket Board and scores of overseas based friends who assisted to organize the event.
Earlier in the day specially arranged Twenty20 cricket match was played in his honour with the Berbice Rest XI led by Assad Fudadin defeating Albion by 7 wickets.
Batting first Albion scored 112 off their allotted overs; Doodnauth Lallbeharry top scored with 45 and Ramnarine Chattergoon 34. Bowling for the rest Team Krisendat Ramoo took 2-11 and Stephen Latcha 2-20 and.
In reply the Berbice Rest team reached 115-3; Delbert Hicks led with an attractive 40* and Rajiv Ivan 22*. Lallbeharry, Chattergoon, Hicks and Ivan received a pair of batting gloves each for their outstanding batting performances.
Latcha was voted best bowler while Lallbeharry was named best batsman. Both received a trophy while the winning team was also presented with a trophy by the Organizers.
