– Corporate assistance needed
In just over one year, Covent Garden Secondary School has been able to produce two players on the national Under-19 rugby squad.
The school more known for its success in cricket has now added rugby to the list of sports in which it participates.
Paying heed to the call by the Guyana Rugby Football Union to increase and spread the base of the sport, Yamaha Caribs undertook the challenge to organise and run a coaching programme in the school, beginning last year May and according to Treasurer of the club Troy Yhip, who also spearheads the coaching programme, the activity has been well supported and the young players have shown a positive attitude and enthusiasm.
Yhip in speaking with Kaieteur Sport said that the two players Valon Adams and Claude Alexander formed part of the national squad that participated in the Caribbean U-19 championship in the Cayman Islands earlier this year.
He added that the club has embarked on a project to get the school ground in playing shape after sometime of neglect and so far with assistance from Scotia Bank, they’ve been able to plough and chip the field, but the inclement weather prevented them from levelling the facility.
“The whole aim of the exercise is to increase the players’ pool within the club and keep it a vibrant force on the local scene, while assisting the Union as well,” Yhip told this newspaper.
Among the plans is to stage an inter-house tournament at the school for U-14 players using the Tag Rugby format which is not as physical as the traditional system.
He pointed out that more assistance from the corporate community is needed to get the outfield into tip top shape and that could cost in the vicinity of around $2million.
