Police fast bowler Garfield Morris grabbed a career best 8-25 on Wednesday to handcuff the University of Guyana (UG) students in their Neal & Massy Demerara zone National 1st division 40-overs cricket match.
Half-centuries from Reginald Rodrigues, Andre Stoll and Rawle Browne spearheaded the Lawmen to 251-8 off their allotted 36 overs before the experienced Morris ran through the batting line-up like a knife through warm butter as the UG crashed to 80 all out.
Rodrigues reached the boundary 4 times in his 62 while Stoll, a left-handed National under-19 player, smashed 5 fours and 2 sixes in his first National 1st division fifty.
Browne, the brother of former West Indies fast bowler Barrington Browne and ex-Guyana First Class player Robin Browne, stroke 11 fours and a six in his entertaining 56 as Police dominated the match from start to finish although Skipper and off-spinner Dhaniram Seepersaud again showed plenty of potential with 4-36. He got support from Berbician pacer Jermaine Reynolds who took 2-38.
The 2 top teams in each zone will meet in the Demerara zone semi-finals with the Demerara champion advancing to the national semis.
The Demerara winner will play against the Berbice runner-up in Berbice while the Essequibo champions face-off with the Berbice winner in Essequibo in the other national semi-final.
National defending champions Young Warriors of Berbice have already qualified for the Berbice semi-final along with Albion and Rose Hall Town Windies Sports Bar.
If West Berbice beat Rose Hall Canjie on Saturday they will finish zone ‘A’ with one loss, the same as Bermine and the 4th semi-finals will be decided on net run rate.
