Football fans were treated to a classic encounter of raw power and unparalleled skills when Fruta Conquerors on the back of a 70th minute strike off the boot of Manasseh Primo, needled Camptown and exacted revenge for an earlier 2-0 (first round) when play in the Cellink Premier League (CPL) continued at the Tucville Ground, Wednesday evening last.
In the evening’s opening game, Georgetown Football Club recorded their first win of the League, comfortably disposing Flamingo 3-1. Forward Peter Parks netted a double (7, 70) while the other goal came compliments of a defense error.
Despite the loss Camptown, on 25 points, still enjoy a second place standing, 6 points below tournament leaders, Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United.
Amidst several botched scoring opportunities by both teams, Primo, one of the young efficient and effective forwards, proved that persistence eventually pays off. The dapper striker was constrained for most of the first half of the game as the Camptown’s defense singled him out for special treatment.
During this time Camptown did enjoy favourable moments, the best of the lot occurring around the 32nd minute when Telson McKinnon collected a pass and skillfully steered the ball from midfield all the way to the mouth of the opposition’s goal. His superb play was rudely disrupted by veteran Gerald Grittens who, entered with a stiff tackle that sent McKinnon tumbling, and the ball safely over the crossbars.
Ten minutes later, McKinnon’s teammate, Nigel ‘Powers’ Codrington collected a pass and simultaneously spun on his left leg while striking the ball powerfully to Conqueror’s goal. On any other night the shot might have been successful but Conquerors’ custodian, Duncan Saul was at the top of his game and pulled off a marvelous save.
Conquerors then changed tactics, playing one touch football. It was around that time that Primo collected a dolly of a pass and raced to the opposition’s goal. However, in his haste to convert, he inadvertently kicked the ball over the bar moments before the half time whistle sounded.
If the first half was characterized by unbridled skill, the second descended into a keen no holds barred tussle. Both sides resorted to unorthodox tactics and after one such incident, Camptown was forced to continue with a reduced squad after Codrington received marching orders when the referee ruled that he had employed excessively dangerous tactics.
Several raids to the goal by both sides proved ineffective and the sound of the final whistle shortly afterwards sent the Fruta boys into wild ecstasy.
The remaining point standings are; Guyana Defense Force-24, Fruta Conquerors-12, Western Tigers-11, Pele-7, GFC-5 and Flamingo FC in the cellar on 3 points. Matches today, from 18:00hrs, GDF match skills Conquerors with main play between Alpha and Pele.
