BERBICE ZONE
– Bermine beat National defending champions Young Warriors by 5 wickets on Sunday in their final preliminary round game in Berbice zone of the National Neal & Massy 40-over 1st division cricket competition.
Bermine whose only loss in six matches in the competition was to West Berbice are now almost assured of a place in the Berbice semi-final and will closely monitor Sunday’s encounter between unbeaten West Berbice and Young Warriors who has lost once from 4 matches. Both West Berbice and Young Warriors will play their last 2 matches this weekend.
Opener Richard Ramdeen, a 21-year-old former West Indies Under-19 player, was last out for a shot-filled 95 from 93 balls as Young Warriors were bowled out for 171 in 32.2 overs. Sean Devers took 3 wickets and fellow off-spinners Jomal Lafluer, Charles Shepard and Devon Clements 2 each.
Former National Under-19 right-hander Anthony D’Andrade continued his fine form since his return from domestic cricket in Trinidad with a classy 54 and got support from Clements (38*) and Skipper and ex-Guyana Under-15 player Julian Moore (27*) as Bermine reached 172-5 in 37.4 overs.
Batting on a slow track in hot conditions, Ramdeen staked a claim for the Berbice senior team opening spot with responsible batting but only Riaz Kassim who made 31 from 26 balls and National Under-19 Coach Hubern Evans (13) reached double figures as wickets fell regularly to the Bermine all-spin attack.
Young Warriors were on the ropes on 130-9 in the 27th over when Ramdeen (then 55) was joined by last man Charran Singh.
The pugnacious Ramdeen scored 40 of the 41 runs in the last wicket partnership in just 3.2 overs with a brutal display of clean hitting.
Ramdeen was dropped by national Under-17 player Jamally Odle at mid-wicket off Clements and proceeded to take 19 off that over while Keon DeJesus again floored him in Devers’ final over which cost 17. Shepard ended the fireworks by having Ramdeen, who hit 4 fours and 6 sixes in his entertaining innings, taken at long-on.
When Bermine began their reply Odle (0) was leg before to left-arm pacer Davendra Ramotar at 2-1 before former Guyana youth Skipper Eugene LaFluer was put down off Ramotar in his next over.
LaFluer and the in-form D’Andrade took the score to 51 before LaFluer (13) fell to spinner Farook Hussain who also removed LaFluer’s younger brother Jomal (12) at 72-3. With the score on 108 and just after reaching his 4th fifty in 6 games, D’Andrade for the second day in a row, appeared very unfortunate to be given LBW as Evans made the break through.
DeJesus (8) departed at 126-5 but Clements and Moore featured in a sensible unfinished 46-run partnership to see their team to victory.
