Zakier, who has gained a reputation for his outstanding work with the Duckworth/Lewis scoring system, has umpired at the Regional youth level and was one of the book scorers during the CWC 2007 World cup matches in Guyana and at the inaugural Test match at the Guyana National Stadium.
The East Bank Essequibo resident is a Farmer by profession and informed that he is looking forward to the challenge of moving Umpiring and scoring in Essequibo forward.
“This is an opportunity for me to make a contribution to uplifting the standard of Umpires and scorers in Essequibo and I look forward to getting the support from all involved.”
Lenny Mohamed is the Secretary while First-Class Umpire Dasroy Balgobin is the Treasurer and Shameer Hussein the Public Relations Officer.
The term of office for the executive expires in December this year and Zakier says he hopes his committee can work towards producing more Umpires and scorers from Guyana’s largest county to represent Guyana in cricket while at the same time proving more qualified officials for Essequibo’s cricket.
The new Chairman disclosed that a special TV show will be hosted in Region 2 during next month’s Busta Essequibo cricket festival.
He said that show, which will be sponsored by Busta, will provide information for the public and should be an educational one for especially young Umpires and scorers.
