National junior table tennis stars, Trenace Lowe and Nigel Bryan won the Women’s and Men’s Singles titles to bring the curtains down on the Medicine Chest Malteenoes Sports Club Table Tennis Open tournament yesterday.

Lowe defeated Natalie Cummings 12-10, 13-11 and 12-10 in the Women’s round-robin final to win the title. She also won 11-6, 11-4 and 11-4 against Chelsea Edghill and 11-1, 11-5 and 11-7 versus Akiecia Nedd.
Bryan beat Paul Meusa 11-9, 9-11, 11-9, 7-11 and 11-7 in the final of the Men’s contest that took the round-robin format. Bryan had also defeated Remy Taitt 11-7, 14-12 and 11-7 and Joel Alleyne 11-9, 7-11, 11-6, 4-11and 11-5.
Other title winners in the two-day, six-category competition were Nedd (girls’ Under-15), Stephen Patoir (boys’ Under-15), Sunil Logan (girls’ Under-13) and Marlon Washington in male Masters’ championships.
Secretary of the Malteenoes Club, Theresa Pemberton stated at the brief closing ceremony that she would like to see the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) take greater accountability for players’ education.
“I’d like to see the tennis association implement some stringent rules like asking players to produce education reports and if they don’t do well in school, they cannot play tennis,” Pemberton believed.
Deidre Edghill, on behalf of the GTTA, thanked the sponsors, Medicine Chest for their contribution to tennis while staking a claim for a similar tournament next year. She said that the association is grateful for the support.
