Members of the Guyana Football Referees Council (GRFC) last evening refused to officiate in the Pele / Sunburst Camptown feature match of a double header, holding fast that the coach and his assistant along with seven players of Pele, who are on charges of misconduct, cannot take part in the game.
The names of the players and officials were on the team list submitted to the referees for the game and this prompted the GRFC officials to leave the Tucville Community Centre ground.
Dozens of spectators were seen discussing and trying to question why the referees took such a stance, many of them were seen approaching the President of the Georgetown Football association Troy Mendonca to seek clarity on the situation.
Pele club President Carey Jacques was furious about the posture the referees took on the issue.
In the curtain raiser, Flamingo squandered a 2-0 cushion as home team Fruta Conquerors stormed back to draw the match. The point gained was Flamingo’s first for the season. More details in tomorrow’s edition.
