Just over a month before President Bharrat Jagdeo takes over the CARICOM chairmanship from Belize’s Prime Minister, Said Musa, the Athletic Association of Guyana, in collaboration with the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the CARICOM Secretariat get ready to host this year’s edition of the 10k road race scheduled for Sunday June 28.
The race will start at the headquarters outside the CARICOM Secretariat Lilliendaal, proceed west along the Railway Embankment and culminates at the Police Sports Club ground.
Director of Youth and Sports, Neil Kumar confirmed that arrangements are going according to plans. He said that officials of the NSC are currently engaged in discussions with CARICOM representatives, Mr. John Campbell and Mr. George Rutherford to put the logistics in place for a successful event. He disclosed that organisers have incorporated a 5k race for competitors drawn from the Special Olympians Committee. “This is a first for us but we would like to have an all inclusive event that does not discriminate,” Kumar said. He also assured that organisers are determined to improve on the quality of the event this year. “We intend to have an impressive opening ceremony that would surpass those witnessed over the years,” Kumar assured.
He pointed out that at the conclusion of the race, organisers have planned a Fruit and Juice Fest that would be held at the Police Sports Club, where beverages brewed from local fruits could be had. The Guyana Police Force steel band would provide the music. “This is a very big event and this year we want to make it as memorable as possible,” Kumar said.
National Sportswoman of the year (2008), Alika Morgan is the current champion and she is highly favoured to retain her crown, while long distance athlete, Cleveland Ford is also scheduled to participate in the event. Another athlete, St Vincentian, Pamenos Ballentyne may participate in the event and Kumar feels that his presence would make the event more competitive
The athletes would be housed at the Ocean View Hotel, Lilliendaal and Kumar assured that all of the logistics are in place to ensure a successful event. “We have already discussed security measures, water points and all of the other intricacies,” Kumar said.
