Mid Section Lions came from behind to beat Belfield Tigers 2-1 in a keenly contested encounter, as play in the annual Ministry of Culture sponsored Inter- Block football competition continued at the Victoria Community Centre Ground on Sunday.
The game was witnessed by a sizeable crowd, as supporters of both teams turned out in their numbers. The Tigers scored in the 27th minute when Aubrey Gibson, a former National Under-23 player, silenced the crowd with a powerful left footer that whizzed past goalkeeper Junior Prior.
In the second half, Mid Section Lions, which fielded a larger number of Premier League players, proved their and worth, as they turned on the pressure and wore down the opposition’s defence.
Orin Elias levelled the score for the Lions in the 82nd minute from a free kick, just outside the 18-yard box to give his team the lead two minutes before stoppage time, when he dribbled Kojo ‘Cutter’ Huntley and shot wide of goalkeeper.
The other game between Giant Killers Backdam Super Eagles and Road Front Elephants, ended controversially as the Elephants protested the referee’s decision after he had blown for an offside and walked off the field.
The competition continues Sunday at the same venue. At 2:30pm, bottom of the table Road Front Elephants take on Mid Section Lions, while at 4:30pm Backdam Super Eagles tackle Belfield Tigers.
