“Western Union as an international brand is cognizant of its corporate responsibilities towards the development of young people in sports and the general development of Guyana and as such will continue to render assistance in this department.”
Marketing Manager of Western Union, Natheeah King, expressed these sentiments shortly after donating sponsorship packages to motor racer, Audi Singh, Fashion Designer, Andrew Harris and Guyana Netball Association President, Maxine Parris at her organization’s Water Street office, yesterday afternoon.
Singh, a race car driver, collected a sponsorship check to address his rigid training schedule for 2009. He will be in action on May 3 at the South Dakota Circuit.
Harris, a Fashion Designer, will travel to Barbados to receive the Caribbean Fashion Designer award he won during last year’s Carifesta activities here in Guyana.
Local Netball Association (GNA) President and executive member of the Caribbean Netball Association, Parris will head a team of under-16 netballers to the 10th Youth tournament scheduled for Jamaica from April 23rd-30th.
Shondell Samaroo, a Vice President of the GNA will also accompany the team in the capacity of Manager/Coach.
Shortly after the presentation, Marketing Manager, Natheeah King said that executives of the Western Union have recognized that young people are pregnant with talent but lack the financial and other resources to hone this talent.
“This is where corporate Guyana comes in,” she said. She also noted that when these young people succeed, Guyana ultimately benefits. “We must not forget that when they win, the entire country also wins,” she concluded. Harris, a 21 year old fashion designer, earned the right to represent Guyana at the Caribbean Fashion Awards, scheduled for Barbados later this month, following a scintillating performance at the Caribbean Fashion designer award ceremony during the Carifesta celebrations last year. Fashion Designer Michelle Cole and make up artiste, Paula DeSouza will accompany Harris to Barbados.
The recipients acknowledged the kindness of Western Union. “We are very grateful for this support and are going to Jamaica to win this tournament,” said Paris. Harris said that he plans to use the opportunity to network with other international personalities in the fashion industry.
“Western Union has made this possible,” he said. Singh simply said thank you to the management of Western Union while promising to train hard to win his impending race.
