Kaieteur Sports – The Guyana Golf Association (GGA) yesterday announced that the 4th Annual National Open Junior Golf Championship will be backed by the Ministry of Education, which continues to throw their weight behind the growth of the sport across schools countrywide.

This year’s tournament will tee off on July 3 at the Westside Golf Course, where the championship will be conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, with the Office of the Chief Education Officer officially issuing approval and notification to all education regions across Guyana.

The GGA in collaboration with the Ministry of Education will be hosting the 4th annual National Junior Open Golf championships at the West Side Golf Club on July 3rd.

This highly anticipated junior golf event is expected to attract hundreds of young golfers from schools and communities nationwide and will feature both male and female participants competing in three age divisions.

Categories will feature players contesting in the Under 13; Under 15; and Under 18 legs, with individual prizes up for grabs alongside the coveted National School Golf Championship Trophy.

GGA president, Aleem Hussain, yesterday said this annual event is built towards growing the Sport across schools while providing the country’s only inter-school Golf competition which further encourages youth participation in sport.

Some of the prizes that will be on offer at the event.

Defending School Champions Bush Lot Secondary School will face a strong field of challengers, including Leguan Secondary School, the former two-time National Champions, along with several emerging schools that have demonstrated significant growth in the sport over the past year.

Trophies will be awarded to the top five finishers in every division, and thanks to the generous support of sponsors and partners, all participants will receive transportation assistance, meals, beverages, and access to equipment at no cost, ensuring that there are no financial barriers to prevent young athletes from participating.

The championship has already attracted support from both longstanding and new sponsors, including: Toolsie Persaud Ltd.; Regal Stationery; Trophy Stall; Magistrate Singh; Monnaf Arjune & Son Construction; Kumar Auto Spares; Dustin Spivey; Madewini Gardens Pools & Eco Resort; Kumar Ramjas (Orlando); and Royal Castle Chicken. Additional sponsors and supporters are expected to join in the coming weeks as preparations continue for the largest junior golf event ever held in the region.

Over the past five years, the Guyana Golf Association, Nexgen Golf Academy, and Westside Golf Course have been the leaders of the development of junior golf in Guyana through structured training programs, school outreach initiatives, youth camps, tournaments, and community engagement activities. Their collective efforts have created unprecedented opportunities for thousands of young people to learn and compete in the sport.

According to Hussain, “Golf teaches honesty, integrity, patience, discipline, and respect—qualities that help shape future leaders. Through this championship, we are providing young people with opportunities to compete and develop life skills that will benefit them for years to come.”
