General Secretary of the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA), Godfrey Munroe, in an optimistic overtone, stated that the many new faces in the sport augur well for the future growth of the discipline.
Munroe spoke to Kaieteur Sport ahead of the commencement of contest on the second day of the National Sports Commission (NSC) Annual Mashramani Table Tennis Tournament at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
“Based on the registrations, a lot of new faces are competing. We have broadened the base of our coaches for players to access,” Munroe confirmed after the noticeable increase of the corps of players competing.
He said that the tournament could be used, because of the many juniors competing, as a “nesting ground for identifying new talent and selecting national teams” ahead of two major upcoming events in April and August.
According to the General Secretary, a squad will be short–listed after the completion of the tournament for the Juniors and Cadet Championships, which is slated for Saint Kitts and Nevis from April 12–19 this year.
In addition, a team for a Pre–Cadet Championships in August will be listed. The details of this event are still sketchy but Munroe, in a proactive move, said that the intention is “to put those squads together for training”.
“This is a year where we will try to have more tournaments. This is good because some older players are going out and the numbers that are now coming through is very much encouraging,” he continued.
Munroe indicated that there is a focus on the junior and cadet levels globally; as a result the GTTA is attempting to expose more players from those categories. He said that they need to full the competitive gap internationally.
“Next year there is a junior Olympics where table tennis is included. Competitively, at the world level, the gap is not so big but we want ensure that our players remain competitive,” the GTTA administrator noted.
Munroe commended the NSC for its unwavering support of the event while mentioning the reward from an existing nexus between Government and sport. The event would not have been successful without such support.
