The Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&SC) Farfan and Mendes under-15 and Pepsi under-19 teams on Friday last honoured nine teachers under their “Scotia Bank Tribute to Teachers” Programme.
The teachers were drawn from schools attended by various members of the teams in the Lower Corentyne area. The awards are aimed at recognising the teachers for molding the minds of the students and to distinguish their outstanding contributions in Lower Corentyne to the education system.
The Event was sponsored by Scotia Bank and the privileged teachers were Sydney Cort – of Port Mourant Primary, Denise Ross – Ankerville Nursery, Coretta Park – Rose Hall Primary, Bagwatie Davie – Belvedere Primary, Sabereena Bhikam – J.C Chandisingh Secondary, Althea Smith – Rose Hall Town Nursery, Odetta Davis – Lower Corentyne Secondary, Krishnanand Narain and Neela Persaud of Port Mourant Secondary. Secretary/CEO of the RHTY&SC Hilbert Foster at the presentation disclosed that members of both teams under the self-development project decided that they wanted to honour teachers from schools they attended and were attending.
In addition, the clubs had observed that teachers were always neglected and only students were recognised whenever they did well.
Speaking directly to the teachers, Foster congratulated them on their achievements and urged them to uphold the high standard they have set. Calling them, the foundation of the education system, he challenged them to be the perfect role models for all their students. Phillip Freeman, Scotia Bank Berbice Manager noted that the Bank was pleased to be associated with the two youth teams in saying thanks to the educators.
Calling the Tribute to Teachers Programme a brilliant and novel idea, Freeman, a former teacher himself urged the awardees to use the awards as a stepping stone to greater success.
Guest Speaker Colin Bynoe, Vice President of the Guyana Teachers Union in a well-received address said he was thrilled at the fact that students were honouring their teachers.
Bynoe, while acknowledging that teachers sometimes work under less than desired situations, always give of their best and are getting remarkable success. He urged the club to make the awards an annual event and to continue to invest in the education sector. Members of all cricket sections in the RHTY&SC are mandated each year to host at least five projects under the Club’s Self Development Programme.
The teams have to come up with the ideas, seek sponsorship and organise the event all by themselves as the club seeks to prepare them as future leaders.
