– Wilson, Welch sweep print prizes
Hard work and a steadfast commitment to the job were attributed as the hallmarks for success which was evidently recognised by the National Sports Commission panel who selected Kaieteur News staffers Franklin Wilson and Rawle Welch as the top Print Photographer and Journalist respectively for 2008 in sports.
Wilson and Welch, who were voted joint winners of the Sports Journalist award in 2007, swept the two top prizes in the Print category to continue the fine run that Kaieteur News Sports Department has enjoyed over the past six years, dating back to 2003 when current Editor Claude David copped his first of three consecutive awards.
After his reign ended, Welch then emerged victorious the following year and has since equalled David’s accomplishment, while Wilson, who has shown his versatility, now adds the photography accolade to his collection.
Speaking with the two reporters, they both acknowledged that the accommodating atmosphere and the unflinching support of Publisher Glenn Lall were the principal reasons for their achievement.
“He has always been supportive to his staff and to give one example, whenever there is a need for any equipment lets say a camera upgrade, he acts instantly in authorising its procurement and this has really encouraged us to work even harder.
Another feature which he has implemented is rewarding staffers, who to his mind have shown the commitment and loyalty to the organisation and for this you can be rewarded monetarily.”
The two added that even though, they are sometimes taken to task for a few letdowns here and there, they take it as positive criticisms which ultimately forces them to focus more, ” Welch said, echoing Wilson’s sentiment.
They vowed to continue the trend by committing to work even harder this year so that Kaieteur News remains the best print media in the country.
