The podium finish also marked Guyana’s second medal overall at the championship this year, following boxer Ken Harvey’s earlier bronze.
McNeil showed composure in a competitive field, holding his position through the final stages, but fell just short down the stretch, falling behind Ecuador Leymer Bano (4:03.46) and winner,
Thiago Goyzueta (4:01.86), from Peru.
In the girls’ 1500m final, Adanya Glenn finished 10th in 5:23.26, gaining valuable international experience as Guyana continues to build its youth athletics programme on the regional stage.
There was more encouraging news on the track as Ezekiel Millington powered his way into the boys’ 100m final after winning his semifinal in 10.60 seconds.
In the girls’ sprint events, Angel Jefffrey finished fourth in her semifinal with a time of 12.48 seconds, narrowly missing out on a place in the final.
In the 400m, Ade Sealy impressed with a 49.07-second run to place second in Semifinal 2, booking his spot in today’s final and keeping Guyana’s medal hopes alive on the track.
In field events, Jarel Campbell finished eighth in the boys’ long jump with a best effort of 6.49m, while David Williams narrowly missed out on a podium finish, producing a strong 6.89m leap in a tightly contested final.
The event was won by Argentina’s Olomos, who set a championship record of 7.30m. Brazil’s DeSouza took silver with 7.03m, while Chile’s Seydewitz secured bronze with 6.94m. (Rawle Toney)
