Leon Johnson and Hoomchand Pooran missed centuries for the Clive Lloyd Super Cats on the second day of their President’s Cup three-day second round match at Bourda yesterday before Shemroy Barrington and Devon Clements shared in an unfinished 164-run second wicket stand for the Lance Gibbs Tigers to keep their team in the fight going into the final day today.
Resuming on their overnight 168-4 replying to the Tigers’ first innings score of 182, the Super Cats reached 373 all out just after lunch with Johnson falling for 88 and Pooran, who scored a ton in the first round, making 79 in their fifth wicket stand of 140.
By the close of the penultimate day the Tigers, facing a deficit of 191, were 167-1 with Barrington unbeaten on a magnificent 79 and Clements on 63.
Johnson, a 20-year-old left-hander who played three ODIs for the West Indies in August, stroked 15 fours from 160 balls and 248 minutes while the 29-year-old Pooran who played the last of his 10 first class matches five years ago, reached the boundaries 11 times in his 79 from 140 balls and 188 minutes to build the foundation for the 300 plus total on a placid track and fast outfield.
Johnson began the day on 47 and Pooran on 29 and once they were separated, Delbert Hicks (30), Esuan Crandon (22) and Ranga Lachigadu (20) chipped in with the bat.
Sixteen-year-old Guyana under-17 fast bowler Seon Daniels bowled beautifully with the old ball to trap Pooran leg before and scatter the stumps of Lachigadu to finish with 2-44 while former Guyana under-19 medium pacer Ryan Hercules (2-46), first class leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo (2-59) and national pacer Brandon Bess (2-89) were also among the wickets.
West Indies under-19 batsman Rajendra Chandrika was caught behind off first-class off-spinner Zaheer Mohamed at 33-1 when the Tigers began their reply but solid batting from Barrington, who represented the West Indies Select X1 against Sri Lanka at the Guyana National Stadium earlier this year, batted with great confidence as he returned to form with a fluent unbeaten 79 decorated with 10 fours from 119 balls.
Clements, a compact right-hander from Berbice, supported with 63 not out from 113 balls with 10 fours and two sixes as the Tigers begin the final day needing another 24 to avoid an innings defeat.
