Forde becomes Guyana’s most decorated SA 10k athlete
– wins first stage of 2008 race in SurinameCleveland Forde became Guyana’s most successful South American (SA) 10k Road Race Classic athlete after winning the first stage of the 2008 challenge in Suriname on Saturday.
Forde won ‘Race 1’ ahead of an unidentified Brazilian athlete while Guyana’s Lionel D’Andrade and Kelvin Johnson placed third and fourth respectively. Kaieteur Sport was unable to get results for the female race.
The ‘Little Kenyan’ as he is known, won the South American race in 2006 after placing second the previous year. Saturday’s win puts Forde on course to win consecutive stages of the marquee road race.
He had good results in previous events in the past four years, finishing behind Brazilian athletes on two previous occasions to finish as the highest ranked Guyanese competitor.
Guyana’s leg of the race will be held this Sunday and Athletics Association of Guyana President, Claude Blackmore informed at a press update on Saturday that five countries have so far confirmed participation.
According to Blackmore, Trinidad and Tobago will be sending eight athletes while Suriname is set to send four, Brazil two, Haiti two and Grenada one. He said other countries have merely promised to send athletes.
Additional, the AAG President told the media that the race will now be known as the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) South American Athletics Confederation 10km road Classic.
The name change was initiated at the South American Confederation Congress in Brazil, which Blackmore attended during the IAAF World Half Marathon and South American Half Marathon over a week ago.
