GFF extends condolences to the bereaved familyFormer junior and senior national footballer Jamain Alleyne aka ‘Turtle’ of Laing Avenue, Georgetown passed away on Friday at the Georgetown Public Hospital at the age of 27 following a brief period of illness.
Alleyne, a former Santos Football club player and captain, donned national colours at the under-16, 18, 20, 23 and senior levels. He also captained Guyana at the under-20 level.
He was an accomplished and skillful midfield player and among his qualities were his nimble touches of the ball, good knowledge of the game, a great motivator and warrior.
Quiet by nature, Jamain was always recognized as a good player and in most teams he was always the youngest member. This trend started at the under-16 level.
His career began at the Pee Wee (under-11) level where he was the highest goal scorer in his first active competition. At age 21 he earned his first call up to the senior national team back in 2002, when Guyana played in Curacao against the Netherlands Antilles.
Due to his general capabilities as a player, Alleyne was always respected a leader and wore the captains’ armband for Santos and the national under-20 teams.
The former Ansa McAl Trading worker had the pleasure of playing alongside a number of former and current nationals in his earlier career, amongst them are Gregory ‘Jacky Chan’ Richardson, Shawn ‘Bubbly’ Beveney now based in England, Dirk Archer, Elton Brown, Sherwin Cadogan and Orlando Gilgeous, Charles ‘Lily’ Pollard, Collie ‘Hitman’ Hercules, Randolph ‘Blackhead’ Jerome, Howard Lowe, Dellon Glen, Neville Stanton, Kayode McKinnon, English based Dean Forbes and the late Marlon Hendricks and Leslie Holligan.
Jamain was born on Laing Avenue where he grew up and lived up to the time of his death.
His father died a few months ago due to a heart attack and because of his illness, Jamain could not attend his father’s funeral. He leaves to mourn his Mother with whom he was living with and a number of siblings.
In extending its condolences to the bereaved mother, family and friends of the late Jamain Alleyne, the Guyana Football Federation stated that the entire fraternity has lost a champion player. He is expected to be laid to rest on Thursday.
