Guyana has lost one of its centenarians with the passing of James Adolphus Bradford, who died on Saturday at the age of 101. Bradford, known as Captain Bradford or Captain Blood, celebrated his 101st milestone in May last.
His granddaughter, Polly Persaud, said that all of Bradford’s relatives know that death is inevitable, but she believes what really brought it on was the fact that, shortly after his birthday, her grandfather lost his eyesight and he became introverted.
According to her, before his birthday, Captain Bradford was active, but after he lost his sight he no longer wanted to go outside or eat.
His eldest daughter, Enid, had to feed him with a bottle, Polly Persaud added.
She said that Bradford worked for the Guyana Forestry Commission for more than 30 years. Persaud added that he was a dedicated member of the Anglican church.
He was also a boat captain who had sailed all of Guyana’s major rivers, she said. Bradford was a father of five — four daughters and a son, who died. He also was patriarch to 26 grandchildren and many great and great-great-grandchildren.
The centenarian was presented with the Independence Medal and, later, the Medal of Service during his lifetime.
