‘No cameras in rooms’ …Royal International Hotel rejects spy-camera accusation
(Kaieteur News) – Royal International Hotel Guyana has denied allegations that guests are being secretly monitored inside their rooms, saying a former guest mistook a photograph of a forgotten suitcase for a live surveillance feed.
The allegation surfaced in a Facebook post by former guest Kareen Lambert, who claimed hotel staff were using hidden cameras to view the interior of guest rooms.

Speaking with Kaieteur News, Managing Director Jason Wang said, “Yes, I checked with my staff to find out what happened and I learned that when the customer checked out she said she left an item, then she went to the front desk and the front desk called housekeeping, the housekeeping used her phone to talk to the front desk… the front desk asked the guest if she needs it, the customer looked into the phone and saw the photo and thought it was cameras.”

The explanation follows a Facebook post by Lambert, who alleged that staff were using hidden surveillance cameras to view the inside of guest rooms. Describing her checkout on May 30, 2026, Lambert wrote, “I handed my key card to the Asian female receptionist on duty who was working alone. While processing my checkout, she checked off our room number and proceeded to pick up a personal cell phone and appeared to be viewing images in real-time.” Lambert claimed she looked closer at the device, adding, “I was curious about what she doing and look at the phone she was holding in her hands and saw that her screen was displaying a live, real-time feed of the inside of our room…clearly showing the blue suitcase we had left behind.” Lambert alleged that when she noticed the screen, the employee panicked and rushed them out, concluding, “In the taxi, it became terrifyingly clear that there are hidden surveillance cameras installed inside the guest rooms, allowing staff to view guests without their knowledge or consent.” However, there is no such evidence of the receptionist rushing them out of the hotel. Kaieteur News received a screenshot of the conversation between the receptionist and the housekeeper which shows a photo sent to the receptionist of the suitcase.
The 245-room Royal International Hotel on Mandela Avenue opened with a display of cultural performances in February 2025. The hotel, which had been under construction on and off for about 10 years, adds to Guyana’s growing tourism and hospitality sector. The majority of the hotel’s local staff comes from nearby D’Urban Backlands, offering a unique blend of expertise and cultural understanding to the guest experience.
