The West Demerara Cricket Association (WDCA) has arranged tape-ball practice sessions for its teams at the National Cultural Centre Tarmac in preparation for the start of the new season.
Last Sunday, Western United (WU) of Patentia got the better of Independence Cricket Club (ICC) of LaGrange in a twenty20 fixture.
Sent in to bat first, WU posted 136-7 in their allotted overs. Fenton Persaud was in fine form for the victors amassing 52 which included seven fours and two sixes. He was ably supported by Dexter George 27 and Rakesh Persaud 28. ICC in reply were bowled out for 110 off 18.4 overs, losing by 26 runs.
Sunil Itwarau was the only ICC batsman to offer any resistance with a fiery 30. Orin Stanley grabbed 3-31 off his 4 overs for WU.
These off-season sessions have become a prominent fixture of the WDCA and according to their PRO, they see the exposure as vital since it helps in maintaining the fitness of players, keeping the teams mobilized at the same time.
The Association is expected to commence the new cricket season in mid July with the quarter finals of the 3rd Annual New Line Aqua Farm 40 overs competition.
West Coast Demerara power houses Meet-en-Meer Zorg East, Zeeburg and Cornelia Ida have all booked places.
They would be joined by Shamrock, new comers La Jalousie and the youthful Crane New Stars. The only West Bank Demerara teams in the mix are Wales and Cultural.
There is no place for two-time and defending champion, Mc Gill Super Stars who were sent packing by Canal # Two Sports Club.
The new season will also see the conclusion of the final of the Cecil Persaud under 15 Competition. Cricket gear will be presented to all the teams that participated in the competition.
The Hand In Hand Second Division 50-overs competition will also commence in the new season.
WDCA’s President Anand Sanasie, and Competitions Committee Chairman Lalta Digamber are expected to meet with clubs soon.
