Chinese firms among 3 that bid to build CJIA’s air traffic control tower
(Kaieteur News) – Three firms, two Chinese and a Guyanese, have submitted bids to construct an air traffic control tower at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri.
At the recent opening of tenders at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) office it was revealed that BK International Inc (Guyana) in joint venture with GECI Espnola Navigation Systems S.A bid GY$3,900,000,000; Shandong High-Speed Dejian Group Company Limited, in joint venture with Beijing Institute of Architectural Design Company Limited bid US$21,648,270; and China CAMCE Engineering Company Limited bid US$89,082,635.86 for the project.

Earlier this year, the government through the Ministry of Public Utilities and Aviation issued a request for proposals for the “Engineering, Procurement and Construction” of the control tower.
Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Deodat Indar at an event last month said that the new air traffic control tower will facilitate more parking spaces for aircraft.
The Department of Public Information, reported that the tower’s current position limits how far the apron can be expanded. With aircraft numbers surging, the airport has reached a point where incoming planes sometimes have to hold while others clear the parking area.
“We have no place to park planes anymore,” Minister Indar said, explaining that, “We have to move it and expand the airport further so that we can have parking areas for more planes.”
In 2020, four airlines operated out of CJIA: Copa, Caribbean Airlines, American Airlines, and Suriname Airways. That figure now stands at 16, with more expected.
“So, we have to get more space for the airplanes to park on the airport,” he said.
Control towers are important as they provide safe, reliable and efficient air navigation services within CJIA’s airspace.
The government allocated $3.2B for CJIA to continue its modernization to meet international standards and position itself as a regional transport hub with in-transit capabilities.
