(Kaieteur News) – Three persons were on Tuesday placed on $100,000 station bail each for damaging components of the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) network at La Penitence, Georgetown.
In a statement posted to its Facebook page, GPL said the power interruption customers experienced in the area was the result of a truck damaging a section of the network.
“According to reports, the vehicle, bearing registration number GYY 5259, was travelling north along the La Penitence Public Road when, upon turning west, it became entangled with overhead telephone cables, resulting in damage to GPL’s network and an interruption of electricity service to the area,” GPL said.
The company immediately dispatched response teams to the scene, and necessary remedial works were carried out. Its efforts resulted in the restoration of service approximately one hour after it was interrupted.
Two porters, along with the driver of the vehicle, were taken into police custody and placed on $100,000 station bail each. A report was lodged at the Ruimveldt Police Station, and investigations are ongoing.
“GPL is alarmed by the high frequency at which incidents involving vehicles and its network infrastructure are occurring and is urging vehicle operators to exercise extreme caution when operating near utility infrastructure,” the company said.
GPL is urging drivers and machinery operators to properly assess their surroundings and ensure adequate clearance from overhead cables before manoeuvring. The company reminded the public that damage to its network can interrupt service, require costly repairs and, more importantly, pose serious safety risks — such incidents can result in severe injury or death to utility workers, motorists and members of the public.
