Bandits snatch CIOG cash after zip-tying security guard
Kaieteur News – Bandits armed with a knife and crowbar reportedly zip-tied a 63-year-old security guard during the wee hours of Tuesday before breaking into the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) building on Woodford Avenue and escaping with a significant amount of cash.
Police have not disclosed the amount stolen but said the robbery occurred around 2:10 a.m.
The security guard, Dennis Ragnauth, had reported for duty at about 7:00 p.m. Monday.
Ragnauth told police that while conducting routine checks around the CIOG compound early Tuesday morning, he was confronted by four men wearing ski masks and hoodies.
One of the bandits reportedly placed an object against his back. Fearing that it was a firearm and that he might be shot, Ragnauth said he froze and did not resist.
He recalled that one of the men was carrying black plastic straps, which were used to tie his hands in front of him. The bandits then relieved him of his $25,000 cellphone and ordered him to lie on the ground.
One of the men remained behind to guard him while the other three proceeded to the CIOG building.
About an hour later, Ragnauth said, the three men returned and left the compound with the lookout.

He waited for approximately five minutes to ensure that the men had gone before getting up and managing to free one of his hands from the zip-tie.
Ragnauth then made his way to the nearby Muslim Youth Organisation (MYO) building, where he called out to the caretaker, 69-year-old Barrat Parbu. When Parbu responded, Ragnauth reportedly told him that gunmen were in the compound. Parbu subsequently contacted his employer, while Ragnauth returned to his post at the CIOG building.
Police were later called in and launched an investigation. According to police, a glass window on the western side of the CIOG building was broken and the security grill was wrenched upwards. Investigators believe the suspects used that opening to gain entry. The bottom flat of the building was ransacked, and cash reportedly kept in a drawer was stolen. Police also reviewed surveillance footage, which showed the suspects entering the compound by jumping over the southern fence. Investigations are continuing.
