(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Public Works in an invitation for initial selection works (shortlist) is seeking applicants for the design and building of bridges across the Mahaica, Mahaicony and Abary Rivers/Creeks.
This project is part of the Reconstruction of Existing Road Network on the East Coast Demerara (ECD) between Mahaica and Abary in Region Five.
According to the ministry’s advertisement, the Guyana Government received financing from the world bank toward the cost of the Integrated Transport Corridors Project (ITCP) and intends to apply part of the proceeds toward payments for this project.
The tender document states that the contractor shall establish the contract duration for the subject project.
“In no event shall the time for completion, which shall include the periods necessary for preparation and approval of the designs, exceed 24 months. The schedule supporting the proposed contract duration will be submitted with the Technical Proposal. It is expected that the Request for Proposals will be launched in October 2026,” the document explained.
The reconstruction of the existing road network on the East Coast Demerara – Mahaica Bridge to Abary Bridge Road Corridor includes the improvement of approximately 27 kilometers of roadway and associated roadway structures (Lot 1), and it involve the extension/construction of the three (3) main bridges, namely the Mahaica River, Mahaicony River and Abary River Bridges (Lot2).
Back in October 2025, the Department of Public Information reported that the government signed a US$156 million loan agreement with the world bank toward the Integrated Transport Corridors Project (ITCP).
According to the article, the project was approved in early 2025 by the world bank and is geared toward supporting Guyana in its quest to upgrade and rehabilitate the country’s road infrastructure, and will focus on enhancing the country’s transport network in selected regions in order to allow for better equipped infrastructure that could withstand natural hazards while providing safer and more reliable movement for persons.
It was reported in the media that the government plans to upgrade the East Coast Road Corridor from Mahaica to Rosignol.
The ministry posted on its Facebook that Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill and his project team will host a stakeholder’s engagement and consultation meeting with residents, business owners, truck operators, rice producers organisation, religious communities, bus drivers’ association to discuss the project.
This will be held on 17th July, 2026 at the Mahaicony Technical and Vocational Training Centre at 16:00hrs.
