(Kaieteur News) Some 37 of the 44 bidders seeking to construct a timber wharf and shed at Mahaicony Central, Region Five, submitted bids below the government engineer’s estimate of $33.7 million for the project.
According to information provided by the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB), the project is being executed through the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) at an estimated cost of $33,720,500.
Of the 44 bids received, 37 contractors submitted bids below the engineer’s estimate, while five bid above the estimated cost. The forms of tender submitted by two bidders were not completed and signed, and no bid amounts were listed.
The project forms part of the $67.6 billion allocated to the Ministry of Agriculture in this year’s national budget.
Through the ministry, the government has been upgrading several fishery facilities across the country to ensure fisherfolk could ply their trade in more organised and secure spaces.
Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha, during the commissioning of a new wharf and shed at the Three Door Koker Landing Site, West Coast Berbice, last year, said upon assuming office, the government recognised the importance of fisherfolk and had prioritised improving their working conditions through the Fisheries Landing Site Enhancement Project.
“It commenced in 2023, costing over $300 million, targeting over 100 landing sites across the country through the construction of washroom facilities, sheds, wharves, solar lighting, ramps, and office buildings. Again, in 2024, another $300 million was expended for the enhancement and development of all Fisheries Landing Sites in Regions Two, Three, Four, Five and Six, benefitting over 300 persons,” he explained at the time.
