Damaged access roads crippling mining operations – GGDMA calls for urgent Govt. intervention
(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) is calling on the government to intervene to repair access roads in mining districts that have been damaged by the ongoing inclement weather.
In a recent statement, the mining body noted that the ongoing heavy rains have flooded several work areas and damaged several access roads making it difficult for miners to access work grounds and critical areas.
The association said the rain has also forced several operators to close camp as the areas are unworkable because of flooding. An example of the severity of the current conditions is evident along the Puruni River, which has overtopped its banks to such an extent that the natural river channel is no longer distinguishable from the surrounding lands. GGDMA said as a result of the excessive width and the strong, fast-flowing current, pontoon crossings in the area have been completely suspended, further restricting access and disrupting mining operations.
GGDMA Managing Director, Avalon Jagnandan said the situation is very serious in the mining districts and is severely affecting miners and their production at a time when gold is at an all-time high.
On behalf of the association, Jagnandan called on the relevant authorities to help repair the damaged road infrastructure that will allow miners to access mining areas more easily.
GGDMA urged miners who are working in the wet conditions to exercise extra caution as the ground can be more unstable. It also reminded miners to follow all safety protocols and the guidance of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission and to continue to sell their gold to the Guyana Gold board or licenced buyers and to keep all their records as evidence.
Jagnandan further noted that the increase in criminal activity in certain areas within the hinterland is also dampening the spirit of vulnerable miners operating in these areas.
