(Kaieteur News) – One person is dead and several others are receiving medical treatment following a three-vehicle collision on the Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD) public road Saturday afternoon — an accident that surveillance footage suggests was set in motion by a dangerous lane change and compounded by excessive speed.
The crash involved a canter, a Route 42 minibus, and a car near the Guyana National Stadium, bringing chaos to one of the East Bank’s busiest corridors in the middle of the afternoon.
Surveillance footage reviewed by this newspaper tells a grim story. The canter is seen crossing from the outer lane on the western side of the road into the inner lane — directly into the path of the oncoming minibus, which was travelling at considerable speed along that same lane.
With insufficient time or distance to stop, the minibus slammed into the canter and was sent flipping onto the eastern side of the Providence Public Road. It then toppled and rolled repeatedly before careening into oncoming traffic, narrowly missing pedestrians who were on a nearby walkway.
A car in the path of the out-of-control minibus was also caught in the collision.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene. Their identity has not yet been released. Several passengers from the vehicles involved were transported to a hospital for emergency treatment. The full nature and extent of their injuries had not been confirmed at the time of publication.
Traffic Chief, Mahendra Singh confirmed to Kaieteur News that ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) have been deployed to the hospital to gather information on the victims and establish a complete picture of the circumstances surrounding the crash.
No official statement had been issued by the GPF up to press time. Further details will be provided as they become available.

heavy vehicles that they lose control of by excessive speeding or other
traffic infractions.
Meanwhile, the deaths continue unabated.
