Kaieteur Sports – Another batting clinic from Windies skipper Shai Hope, backed by fiery spells from Jason Holder and Shamar Joseph, piloted the Caribbean side to a win over Sri Lanka last night in the first T20 played at Sabina Park, Jamaica.
Sri Lanka posted a modest 147-9 in their 20 overs batting first at Sabina Park.
Choosing to bat first, the visitors suffered an early top-order collapse under intense pressure from the hosts’ bowling unit.
Middle-order batsman Kamindu Mendis rescued the innings with a brilliant 51 off 39 balls, (4×4 2×6) sixes.
Kusal Mendis chipped in with a brisk 36, but the rest of the lineup collapsed under the ferocity of twin pacers Jason Holder who led with a stellar 3-18 backed by Guyanese Shamar Joseph who claimed 3-29.
West Indies then successfully chased down the target of 148 in the final over to finish on 149-3, with four balls left despite requiring 6 runs from 6 balls at one point.
Hope led from the front with a masterful, unbeaten knock of 65 off 54 (5×4 2×6), which anchored the chase.
Opening partner Brandon King provided early fireworks, blasting 22-ball 37, as Sri Lanka ace spinner Wanindu Hasaranga claiming bagged 2-32 but failed to ruffle the feathers of Hope who Hope stayed calm to the end.
Guyanese Shimron Hetmyer (17) and all-rounder Roston Chase (16*) were the next best batsmen for the West Indies, who will be looking to secure another W come Saturday when the second match gets underway. (Clifton Ross)
