Republic Bank lauds investment in Mills Girls Camp

Kaieteur Sports – Republic Bank has reaffirmed its commitment to the development of women’s and girls’ football, describing its sponsorship of the Vurlon Mills All-Girls Football Summer Camp as a worthwhile investment in the future of the sport.

The Republic Bank-sponsored camp got underway on Monday at the Saints Ground on Carifesta Avenue and will run until August 14, bringing together girls between the ages of six and 16 for five days of football training, personal development and education.

Jonelle Dummett, Republic Bank’s Marketing and Communications Manager, said the institution’s support is aimed at helping create a safe and comfortable environment where young girls can develop their football skills and build confidence through participation in the sport.

The bank’s investment has also provided an opportunity to broaden the camp’s impact beyond football. Participants between the ages of 14 and 16 will benefit from financial literacy sessions conducted by Republic Bank staff, equipping them with practical knowledge about managing money and making sound financial decisions.

Dummett also pointed to the progress of several girls who have participated in the programme and subsequently advanced to Guyana’s national youth teams, highlighting the camp’s growing importance as a development platform.

The initiative has received the endorsement of the Guyana Women’s Football Association (WFA), with president Andrea Johnson identifying the camp as an important pathway for young girls into organised football, club competition and, ultimately, the national team.

Johnson said the programme complements the WFA’s broader strategy for developing women’s football, particularly by introducing girls to organised football at an early age.

The Guyana Football Federation’s investment in coach education has further strengthened the camp, with several qualified coaches involved in the programme. Their participation ensures that the young players are exposed to structured training delivered by coaches with recognised qualifications.

For former Guyana international Vurlon Mills, who turned to youth development after retiring from club and international football, the All-Girls Camp remains one of the most important programmes on the academy’s annual calendar.

Held during the August school holidays, the camp seeks to address the need for greater opportunities for girls to become involved in football while providing a structured environment for them to develop technically and personally.

Mills has consistently stressed the importance of increased investment in girls’ football, particularly at the grassroots level, and views Republic Bank’s support as significant because it targets an area of the sport that has traditionally attracted less investment.

According to Mills, the partnership with Republic Bank therefore extends beyond the delivery of a football camp, stating that it represents an investment in creating opportunities for young girls, strengthening the pathway into organised football and equipping participants with skills that can benefit them both on and off the field.
