Govt. to spend $25.9M more to rehabilitate roof at Cliff Anderson Sport Hall
(Kaieteur News) – The Cliff Anderson Sports Hall located on Homestretch Avenue, which has been under renovation since 2022 will see the government spending approximately $25.9 million more on the facility this year, to rehabilitate the roof.
This is according to the latest invitation for bids issued by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport which was published in Sunday’s edition of the Kaieteur News. According to the tender document, bids for this project are expected to open on June 30, 2026 at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) office.
The project is the latest to be added to the sport facility where initial works began in late 2022.
The Cliff Anderson Sports Hall which the government has been renovating since 2022.
In January 2025, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Charles Ramson at a press briefing said the government has since invested some $321 million in various works at the building.
This newspaper reported that in November 2022, the ministry awarded a contract worth $97 million to ECS Construction & General Supplies, to cover only the first phase of the project. That phase, entailed the redesign of the front section of the building, which would be reconstructed.
In December that year, the NPTAB awarded an initial contract for the installation of the HVAC systems at the facility. That $89,840,020 project was awarded to ECS Construction & General Supplies. During that month too, another contract for electrical installation was awarded to A. Ogransein & Sons to the tune of $31,409,000.
Following that, NPTAB awarded a $60,324,675 contract to S&K Construction Consultancy Service & General Supply for the completion of the northern face of the building.
At the press briefing Minister Ramson said that approximately $7.6 million was spent on plumbing works that was done by KNV Designs Construction. Another $4 million was spent to replace an area which had rotten boards in a concrete structure.
Further, he disclosed that rehabilitation work was done on the roof by Rishma and Sisters Enterprise for $9.4 million. Rehabilitation was also done on the side walls for $7.9 million, which was executed by R. Persid Construction, and ceiling works for $12 million.
Notably, the minister explained that in relation to the installation of AC, which was initially awarded for $89 million, “We had to terminate that project in 2023. They completed about $65 million worth of works, but we terminated the project because they were delaying, it was poor performance so it delayed. It is not that they weren’t doing quality work, it is that they were taking too long.”
To complete the installation of the AC, he explained that the ministry tendered for and awarded a $37 million contract.
He had mentioned at the time that the remaining works to complete the project related to the parking lot area and the installation of bucket seats.
Meanwhile, the ministry in 2025 tendered for the construction of a section of a fence, an access bridge, and to upgrade of the lighting on the court at the facility.
