(Kaieteur News) – A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) on Friday called for President Irfaan Ali to resign and make way for a forensic audit into the acquisition of his 150-acre ranch located at Long Creek, Soesdyke-Linden Highway.
Attorney and Member of Parliament (MP), Dr. Dexter Todd said the party condemns the glaring double standard that has become the hallmark of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) government under President Ali.
He highlighted that while there are thousands of hardworking citizens, especially public servants, who continue to struggle with inadequate wages and salaries while the head-of-state is at the center of a serious sting of allegations surrounding extensive farming operations at Long Creek. The questions, he said, require answers not a political spun.
“The president also exercises oversight over the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission and therefore has responsibility for the policies and management of land allocation and has accumulated this land while thousands of Guyanese wait years for land allocations.
Reports indicate that more than 30,000 applications for land exist along the Soesdyke-Linden corridor, yet ordinary citizens are repeatedly told to wait because land is unavailable or the process is delayed.”
Dr. Todd said public servants, including teachers, nurses, police officers, members of the disciplined services, and others who dedicate their lives to serving the nation, cannot secure a house lot or agricultural land after years of applying, and they are expected to survive on wages that continuously lag behind the rising cost of living, as they watch those at the highest levels of government acquire substantial landholdings and develop agriculture mega projects.
The party is adamant that the government cannot justify asking ordinary Guyanese to wait years “while the President, family, friends, and favourites give themselves large pieces of state lands. This is unequal treatment, misuse and abuse of power and personal enrichment at the expense of the people of Guyana.”
He said further that the glaring unequal treatment is deeply disturbing and damaging to the confidence of the public and can only be addressed through full transparency, accountability and independent investigations.
“To this end, the president should resign to facilitate an impartial and thorough forensic investigation. Guyanese deserve to know how much land has been acquired, when it was acquired, how it was acquired, and whether every applicable fee, law, policy, and procedure was applied to ensure that the same procedures that ordinary citizens have to follow were followed,” he stressed.
APNU’s aim is to bring to the public’s attention what it deems as an unacceptable situation in which allocation of land along the Linden Soesdyke Highway is carried out without land being left unencumbered, catering for future expansion of the highway. It begs to question whether it is an absence of planning or a deliberate policy to compensate the family, friends and favourites of the government when it is time to expand the highway into a four-lane highway, Dr. Todd relayed.
In light of the recent developments the party is calling for all relevant records relating to President Ali and the other senior officials of government landholdings to be made public immediately. In addition, there should also be a comprehensive audit of land allocations along the Soesdyke-Linden corridor, including the number of applications, waiting time, acreage allocated, and allocations involving politically affiliated persons.
“The government must stop treating public servants as an afterthought. They deserve living wages, timely access to land, and the same opportunities available to those in positions of power. We demand a reduction in waste and corruption and the allocation of those resources to increase the wages and salaries of workers,” Dr. Todd stressed.
He reminded that the country’s resources belong to the citizens and not to a privileged elite. The coalition, he stated, will continue its fight for transparency, accountability, fair access to land, and a government that serves the people rather than itself and the powerful.
