Kaieteur Sports – Guyana kept its FIBA AmeriCup Caribbean Pre-Qualifiers campaign on course with an impressive 68-53 victory over Dominica on Thursday night, securing its second win in three matches before an enthusiastic home crowd at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

Stanton Rose jr had a game-high 20 points to lead Guyana.

With the victory, the home side heads into its final group-stage encounter against Bermuda knowing another positive result could prove crucial in the race for qualification.

Captain Stanton Rose Jr. led from the front with a game-high 20 points, while narrowly missing a double-double after pulling down nine rebounds.

The versatile forward also contributed five assists and four steals in another all-round performance that inspired the hosts.

Guyana enjoyed balanced scoring throughout the contest, with Kevon Wiggins continuing his outstanding tournament after following up his heroics against Antigua and Barbuda with 16 points.

Umar Rashid added 10 points, nine rebounds and three steals, while Kevin Mickle embraced the physical role in the paint, finishing with a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds, along with four steals.

Despite the convincing final margin, the contest was far from straightforward.

Dominica came out with greater urgency and edged the opening quarter 16-13, forcing Guyana onto the back foot early.

The visitors continued to frustrate the hosts for much of the first half, but Guyana responded by winning the second quarter 13-8 to trim the deficit and head into the halftime break trailing by just two points at 26-24.

Guyana’s Captain, Stanton Rose Jr had a crucial game-high 20 points for Guyana against Dominica.

As the second half unfolded, Dominica appeared poised to regain control. However, Wiggins delivered several timely baskets that kept Guyana within striking distance before Rose Jr. and Mickle took over at both ends of the floor.

The home side’s defensive intensity increased dramatically after the interval, generating turnovers that were converted into easy transition baskets.

Rashid controlled the boards, Mickle dominated inside, and Rose Jr. orchestrated the offence as Guyana gradually pulled away to secure a comfortable 15-point victory.

Guyana will now turn its attention to Bermuda in its final group-stage fixture on Friday night, with hopes of closing out the preliminary round on a high.

Elsewhere in the tournament, Haiti recorded its first victory by cruising to an 89-70 triumph over Grenada.

Lee Dort led the Haitian charge with 22 points, while Ronaldo Segu added 18. Grenada was paced by Daniel Regis with a game-high 24 points, while Kevin Cox chipped in with 22 in the losing effort.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines also strengthened its campaign with a commanding 96-63 demolition of Dominica. Phillip Lawrence-Ricks scored 19 points to lead the winners, while Tyler Fraser and Chrisford Telesford each finished with 15 points.

Meanwhile, the Turks and Caicos Islands continued their impressive run in Group A, rallying for a 76-61 victory over Bermuda to secure their second win of the tournament.

Friday’s schedule promises another exciting day of basketball, with unbeaten Barbados taking on Grenada at 12:30 pm, followed by Haiti against the Cayman Islands at 3:00 pm Dominica will then meet Bermuda at 5:30 pm before Guyana closes out its group-stage campaign against Bermuda in a pivotal encounter.
