(Kaieteur News) – A 25-year-old miner of Kwaimatta Village, North Rupununi, Region 9 was killed on Tuesday after the mining pit he was working in collapsed. The incident occurred at Chi Chi Backdam, Upper Mazaruni River.
The victim has been identified as Ryan Roberts. According to preliminary police reports, the incident occurred at approximately 14:45 hrs while Roberts and a crew of labourers were working inside a mining pit. The situation turned critical when a water hose suddenly burst. As workers scrambled to secure the immediate area, a massive portion of the pit wall collapsed without warning. While the other miners managed to successfully flee the pit, Roberts was trapped and buried beneath the falling earth.
Co-workers acted quickly to excavate Roberts from the debris, but he was found unresponsive. He was transported to the Chinoweing Health Centre, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by the attending medical personnel.
