(Kaieteur News) – A fire of unknown origin on Friday night destroyed approximately nine buildings leaving more than 20 persons homeless at Apaiqua Landing, Mazaruni River, Region Seven.
While it is unclear if anyone was injured during the incident, Kaieteur News understands that the nine buildings include businesses and homes.
Following the fire, Minister of Home Affairs, Oneidge Walrond and Minister of Natural Resources, Vickram Bharrat, on the instructions of President Irfaan Ali, visited the location and engaged with affected residents on Saturday.
“Our thoughts remain with the families and business owners impacted during this difficult time. We are currently on the ground assessing the situation and coordinating efforts to provide assistance and support to those affected wherever possible, while investigations into the cause of the fire continue,” the minister stated.
