Kaieteur Sports – Residents of Linden, led by veteran cyclist Nigel London, hosted a Linden Road Race on Saturday to honour former national cycling champion and two-time Olympian, Joelyn James Joseph, as it marks the 56th anniversary of becoming a town.
The Road Race took a ride from the Call Centre in Kara Kara on a route that took them through the town and back to the Call Centre.
London, who is the Guyana Cycling Federation’s President, when contacted, said, “The town will honour its cycling great, Joely James Joseph, with a special road race. It is my view that we do not honour our sportsmen and women in the manner that they should.”
“Our children do not see billboards in the manner they should, and I have spoken to the fact that children do not see billboards with the likes of former national footballers Collie Hercules and Zipper Johnson, Mice Cummings or track stars like Desmond Hector, among others. It is deliberate on my part to show that Joelyn, while he is here and still active with us, should be honoured.”
London continued: “I have spoken with the authorities and let them know from a discussion that this is an event that honours James Joelyn Joseph.”
“It is amazing that Joelyn has kept himself in such good shape for 50-plus years of competing for Guyana. He is still able to compete. That’s how good he is. Additionally, this is a race that is for Lindeners only, in line with the theme for Linden Town Week for the inter ward football and basketball competitions.”
“The argument holds that cycling should be doing the same. So, we have two main teams, Team Velocity and We Stand United, of which I am president. We should be having a race for the younger ones from Bamia to the top of the hill, and then finish at the line by the roundabout.”
