(Kaieteur News) – President Irfaan Ali, on Monday, made a definitive call for a shift in the governance of the nation’s capital, stating his “clear intention” to see a People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) led City Council.
Speaking at the official commissioning of the $6B newly transformed four-lane Aubrey Barker Road in South Georgetown, the Head-of-State signaled that the central government is ready to move beyond “temporary interventions” to full-scale management of the city’s infrastructure. The transformation of Aubrey Barker Road into a four-lane highway significantly improves the Ogle–Eccles link. This 4.4-kilometer corridor now features modernised drainage, sidewalks, safety signage, and upgraded lighting, complemented by a 1.6-kilometer extension leading to Ogle Road.
“I am interested in seeing a People’s Progressive Party/Civic-led city council,” President Ali told residents and officials. “I am interested in seeing strong government, strong leadership at the City Hall. So don’t guess what I’m saying… We want the chance to run this city because this city deserves better than what it has today.”
The President’s remarks come amid ongoing friction between the Central Government and the current APNU-led Mayor and City Council (M&CC) over drainage maintenance and infrastructural responsibility. Addressing the perennial issue of flooding, Ali stated he was not interested in a “blame game” but noted that if the council fails to maintain drains or operate pumps, the government is prepared to act “continuously” with the people’s support.
The commissioning of the Aubrey Barker Road, now a modern four-lane thoroughfare connecting South Georgetown to the Heroes Highway, was framed by the President as a “strategic” rather than “isolated” project. He announced that the road has been officially designated a public road, placing it under the direct management of the Ministry of Public Works to prevent it from falling into “neglect.”
“Our road networks must be modernised to accommodate exponential growth… reduce congestion, and increase productivity,” Ali said. He revealed that over 50 roads in Georgetown have been designated as public roads to “accelerate modernisation” under the national development agenda.
President Ali highlighted the tangible economic impact of the government’s infrastructure drive, citing “real-world” examples of wealth creation in the South Georgetown area.
According to data from the Chief Valuation Officer, a piece of land purchased in the community for $5 million in 2021 was recently sold for $38 million in 2026, a 700% increase. Another property bought for $23 million in 2017 was sold for $112 million this year.
“In any economy in the world, where your asset is growing by 10% even every year, they call that miraculous,” the President remarked. “In five years, you had your net asset growing by an average of 100% annually.” The Head-of-State used the platform to outline a massive national transport master plan currently underway, including:
Acknowledging the “temporary inconveniences” of ongoing construction, the President urged patience. “The traffic you endure today will become the travel you enjoy tomorrow,” he assured.
In a closing appeal for national unity under his “One Guyana” banner, President Ali invited supporters of all political stripes to join the government’s developmental trajectory.
“Whether you are in the PNC, the APNU, or any serious political entity, you are welcome on this journey,” Ali said. “To those who might have fell accidentally to the masquerade that allowed wrong choice… the door of progress and development awaits your arrival.”
The Aubrey Barker Road project was completed by local contractors and engineers, whom the President commended for turning “plans into pavement and vision into visible results.”
