(Kaieteur News) – Opposition Leader, Azruddin Mohamed, on Monday criticised the government for spending GY$24 million on a water ambulance, which he said should not have cost more than GY$8 million.
Kaieteur News previously reported that Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony on Friday handed over a new “state-of-the-art” water ambulance, which cost $24,883,154 to the Regional Administration of Region Seven.
The We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party leader, in a Facebook post highlighting the challenges of residents in Region Seven stated that the $24 million could have bought three water ambulances instead.
“I saw (Minister) Frank Anthony, standing next to the ambulance at a cost of $24 million. Unbelievable, that ambulance shouldn’t cost more than $8 million, so we could have had three ambulances with that money. The corruption will never end under the PPP,” Mohamed said.
According to the Opposition Leader, having visited several communities in Region Seven earlier this year, and among the issues affecting residents is that from his engagement in Middle Mazaruni villages, there is a need for a water ambulance there, because there is no proper medevac services available.
The Ministry of Health in a statement, shared that the $24 million water ambulance is specifically designated to serve the residents of the middle and lower Mazaruni areas, significantly strengthening emergency medical evacuation networks and riverine medical outreach capabilities.
Minister Anthony at the handing over said the ambulance is part of the Ministry’s broader master plan to build out a seamless transportation and technological grid across interior locations.
“We recognise that in Region Seven, we needed to have several river ambulances. On the request of the regional administration, we were able to procure this vessel to assist in bringing patients to central spots, when necessary,” the minister stated.
This publication understands that the aluminum vessel is equipped with two beds, cupboards to store medical supplies, seating areas for medical personnel, and comes with an oxygen equipment. Minister Anthony had mentioned that over time, they will add more equipment to the vessel when necessary.
