(Kaieteur News) – Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman, a former professional boxer of national acclaim, was sentenced to 48 months imprisonment when he appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Magistrate Michelle Matthias handed down the sentence after Eastman, 55, pleaded guilty to the offence of possession of 265 grams of marijuana.
The father of six was nabbed with the prohibited substance at Pitt Street in New Amsterdam, Berbice last Friday, and was taken into custody. Two other accomplices were also located not long after and apprehended by police.
The trio was formally charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking, contrary to Section (5)(1)(a)(i) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act, Chapter 10:10.
Eastman’s particulars indicated that he is unemployed and is without a fixed place of abode.
The magistrate ruled that in addition to jail time, he will be fined three times the market value of 265 grams of cannabis. Magistrate Matthias pointed out that Eastman is a repeat offender. He appeared in court previously for a similar matter. Taking that into account, she ruled that he spends 48 months in prison.
In his earlier years, Eastman achieved national recognition and also represented Guyana overseas during his decorated career spanning two decades (1994-2014) as a pugilist.
Meanwhile, his two accomplices were also given small sentences. Clarence Crawford, an 18-year-old fisherman of Islington Village, East Bank Berbice, was given a 12-month sentence after pleading guilty. In determining the length for his jail time, the magistrate explained that consideration was given to his age and the fact that he was a first-time offender. She admonished that he uses his time under incarceration as a learning process to reform his conduct. It was also ordered that he be fined three times the market value of 195 grams of cannabis.
On the other hand, 39-year-old George Green, known as ‘Quamy’, and who is a repeat offender, was jailed for 3 years. One-third of his sentence was cut short owing to his guilty plea. The coconut vendor, of Lot 37-39 Howard’s Alley, New Amsterdam, Berbice, was arrested at Main and Nicolay Streets, New Amsterdam, Berbice. Along with his sentencing, the magistrate ordered that he be fined three times the market value of 193 grams of cannabis. Sergeant Clarke led the prosecution’s case.
