(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh this Easter look like it take a vow to baptize the whole country—whether you want it or not. Rain falling like it trying to wash away every memory since Independence. One old man seh he ain’t see so much water since 1971, and even then he think the clouds did get stage fright and hold back lil bit. This year? Nah bai—sky open like somebody forget to turn off the pipe.
Everywhere you turn is mud, puddle and people hopping like they playing hopscotch just to reach the shop. Kite flying? More like kite swimming. If your kite ain’t waterproof, you better send it back in the bag and tell it try again next year. Dem boys seh even the Easter cross buns looking – well cross.
But while rain soaking everybody, some folks raising storm of a different kind. They carrying on about government not putting on theatrical productions for Guyana 60th anniversary. Like if Independence celebration does only count if somebody in costume shouting dramatic lines on a state-funded stage.
Dem boys seh hold on—wasn’t it when money tight tight that local theatre turn professional? Back then, no big sponsor, no fancy grant—just talent, hustle, and a lil faith that people would buy tickets. And guess what? It wuk! People laugh, cry, clap, and pay.
So now that pockets a lil fatter, why the sudden amnesia? Why theatre suddenly need government to hold it hand again? Is like learning to ride bicycle without help, then years later demanding somebody run behind you with training wheels.
And leh we be honest—government ain’t sponsoring plenty things this anniversary. Nobody crying for state-funded bird-whistling competition. Nobody protesting for national horse-cart race championship. Dem boys seh nothing stopping the theatre producers from putting on dem own shows. In fact, with all this rain, people might just pay good money to sit dry inside and laugh. Who knows—they might even turn a profit. And wouldn’t that be the real independence story?
Talk half. Leff half.
