Rain dampens Cheddi and Janet Jagan Memorial Inter School Windball Cricket competition in New Amsterdam/Canje zone

Teams assembled for the Cheddi and Janet Jagan Memorial Inter School Windball Cricket competition in the New Amsterdam Canje zone.

Kaieteur Sports – There was some action, but the inclement weather played a major role in the ongoing Janet Jagan Memorial Female Windball Cricket and the Cheddi Jagan Male champions’ trophy tournaments.

The New Amsterdam/Canje leg of the competition was held at the Rose Hall Community Centre Ground, East Canje on Tuesday.

The competitions are a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport and the National Sports Commission. The coordinator is Senior Sports Officer Allister Munroe.

The day’s activity was dampened by the inclement weather. However, there was some action. There was an opening ceremony which featured Region 6 Regional Chairman Junior Bassant, Regional Executive Officer Rajendra Persaud and Regional Education Officer Satish Oudit.

Mr Bassant thanked the organisers for the initiative and welcomed the participants to the region. He stated that the region is always open to such activities which enables both students and adults in showcasing their talents.

Mr Bassant mentioned that cricket is dear to him. He loves to play and watch the game. He urged the children to grab the opportunities being presented. Stating that, this could be a starting point in a long and fruitful cricketing career.

The Regional Chairman urged the schools to not only win the local segment of the competition but win at the national level and make Region 6 proud. He stated that if they win the national final they will be adequately rewarded by the Region.

Before declaring the day’s activity opened he urged the students to be disciplined and maintain good camaraderie.

Regional Executive Officer, Mr Persaud, pledged the Region’s full support to the competitions. He also urged the students to be disciplined and show that Region 6 has the most well-behaved students in the country.

He echoed sentiments of his support and involvement, including sponsorship in this and similar competitions in the past.

He told the students that every participant in the competition is a winner and urged the students to use such competition as a stepping stone for bigger things to come. He wished all, including the organisers, success in the activity.

Similar sentiments were expressed by Mr Oudit in his remarks.

The first ball was struck by the REO, followed by the Regional Chairman and Regional Education Officer and other officials.

Results of some matches which were played at three overs a side due to the inclement weather:

Among the girls:

Tutorial Academy Secondary School (TASS) batted first and scored 27 – 4. J C Chandisingh Secondary reached 29 – 3.

Vryman’s Erven Secondary (VESS) 25-1. New Amsterdam Multilateral (NAMS) 20-1.

In the boys’ division:

Tutorial Academy SS 33-3, Melano Parkmade 16.

Canje Secondary School 36-3, Richard Ramdehall 19.

Berbice High School 27-2. J C Chandi Singh 30-1, Sahid Gajnabi 30.

In another game NAMS- 20-3. Vryman’s Erven Secondary 21-1.

The competition is expected to continue on Thursday at the National Gymnasium from 10:00 hrs with schools from the East Bank of Demerara in action.
