(Kaieteur News) – Police are still searching for 28-year-old Christopher Ali, who allegedly stabbed 15-year-old Tiana Chapman 25 times on Tuesday evening, leaving her hospitalised with life-threatening injuries.
The attack reportedly occurred at the home of a friend along the East Bank of Berbice and has sent shockwaves through surrounding communities.
Chapman, who turns 16 in May, remains warded at the New Amsterdam Hospital, where she is said to be making steady progress.
On Thursday, Ali’s mother broke her silence, expressing sorrow and condemnation over her son’s alleged actions. However, she also argued that the teenager’s family should share responsibility for what unfolded, claiming she had long opposed the relationship between her son and the underaged girl.
“This relationship start a long while ago… when they come to me, I was not in agreement. I said no because this is trouble,” the woman stated, explaining that she distanced herself from her son because she refused to condone the relationship.
According to her, the teen’s mother permitted Ali to visit and stay overnight at her home, a situation she described as troubling and inappropriate given the girl’s age.
“On behalf of myself, I put out my son, because I cannot condone that,” she said.
Ali’s sister echoed similar sentiments, stating that she too objected to the relationship and that her disapproval created tension within the family.
“My brother used to go there and sleep there. The mother was aware… she was okay with it,” the sister claimed.
The sister said she was unaware that her brother had returned to Berbice after working in Georgetown for several months. She described being awakened Tuesday night by a group of angry residents shouting that Ali had stabbed the teen.
“I never expect this… I was really shocked, devastated,” she said.
Despite condemning his actions, both relatives insisted they never anticipated such violence.
Meanwhile, relatives and friends of Chapman say they are unaware of Ali’s whereabouts. Police have not yet announced any arrests as investigations continue.
