(Kaieteur News) – Frustration is boiling over in Haslington New Scheme, East Coast Demerara as residents say a $65 million bridge project under construction since November last year remains incomplete, with little to no visible work being carried out in recent months.
At the request of concerned residents, Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed visited the community on Friday and witnessed firsthand what villagers describe as a stalled project that has left them struggling to access their homes safely.
According to a statement issued by Mohamed’s office, with the main bridge still unfinished, residents are now forced to drive along a pedestrian walkway—an arrangement many say is both dangerous and unacceptable.
The project, which critics have labelled “overpriced,” was expected to bring much-needed relief to the growing community.
“This thing is very frustrating, since last year we in this mess. It is costing us a lot of money and also the inconvenience. Since when a small bridge like this taking so long to complete,” a frustrated resident who was on hand to meet Mohamed complained.
Mohamed said during a recent site visit by Mohamed, the contractor reportedly committed to completing the bridge by March this year. Yet, according to residents, progress remains at a standstill.
But the bridge is not the only sore point.
The community ball field has been non-operational for years, depriving young people of a safe recreational space. “Nothing is happening here…they the government only coming when is elections,” another resident told Kaieteur News. Chairman of the Neighbourhood Democratic Council, Michael Spencer could not be reached for a comment.
Meanwhile, the opposition leader also highlighted in his press release said that clogged and overgrown drains are compounding concerns in the village, especially with the rainy season looming.
Mohamed has called on Public Works Minister Juan Edghill and Culture, Youth and Sport Minister Charles Ramson Jr. to intervene urgently to ensure the bridge is completed without further delay and that long-neglected works at the community ground and drainage system are addressed.
