(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Housing has moved to terminate underperforming contractors who were contracted to execute infrastructural works at sections of the Great Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara.
On Thursday, Minister Collin Croal and Minister within the Ministry Vanessa Benn conducted on-site inspections at Great Diamond area, as part of the ministry’s intensified oversight of infrastructure delivery in developing housing schemes.

According to information provided by the ministry on Friday, is that during the inspection decisive steps were taken to address infrastructure delays affecting about 21 per cent of allottees of blocks one and seven at Great Diamond. These decisions included the termination of underperforming contractors and re-tendering the works so that allottees can gain access to their lands.
“It’s not the entire blocks one and seven that are inaccessible. It’s only sections within those two blocks that are affected,” Minister Croal clarified.
This publication understands that Block One comprises 1,018 lots, with lots 493 to 677 affected, while Block Seven contains 725 lots, with lots 31 to 220 impacted.
The housing minister emphasised that the action taken at Great Diamond demonstrates the ministry’s firm approach to contractor performance and its commitment to delivering serviced house lots to Guyanese.
It should be noted that the re-tendering process is underway and is expected to open by the second week of March, with contracts likely to be awarded by the end of March.
The ministry stated that once awarded, contractors will mobilise to commence infrastructure works.
“To ensure transparency, the ministry will keep affected allottees informed so they can track when access to their lands becomes available,” the ministry reported.
