(Kaieteur News) – Mark Emmanuel, the 28-year-old Williamsburg, Corentyne man who developed a life-threatening brain tumor died on Tuesday, his wife Jennifer Manooram told Kaieteur News on Thursday.
Emmanuel, a father of three, died while in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). The 28-year-old woman explained that his passing was not due in full to the tumor. She disclosed that it was only recently when Emmanuel was taken to GPHC that they found out he suffered from diabetes.
“On the 3rd of February, Mark was laying on the bed with no kind of movements, he was not taking no food or liquids…I took him to the Georgetown Public Hospital, only to hear doctors says he have excess high blood sugar, (after) which he was admitted…we did not know he was a diabetic,” she told this publication.
He was “coming around” and his family had high hopes of him being able to return home. However, his heart rate dipped gravely, but resuscitative efforts kept him alive.
The family was successful in acquiring the necessary funds for his operation, which, outside of travel expenses, stood at $1.5M.
Kaieteur News had reported on February 3, 2026, that the 28-year-old man was seeking public assistance to facilitate a specialist surgical operation in India, a more ideal and less costly alternative to having it done in Trinidad. He was due for operation in the first week of February, but other health complications forced a postponement.
His situation had its starting point when he reportedly sustained an accidental blow to the left of his head from a sledgehammer back in 2018.
His family began to observe physical anomalies back in 2024, and he was officially diagnosed after experiencing frequent seizures and fainting. As his health started to decline, Emmanuel had become severely weakened and had difficulty walking. His head would at times be swollen. Further, the left side of his body was greatly enfeebled, rendering him incapable of performing many basic personal tasks on his own.
“As Mark’s wife, Also Mark’s mom and Mark’s dad, we would like to thank the public for the financial help, also the prayers and blood that was donated to Mark…we thank everyone so much. Mark has left his family heartbroken,” Manooram said.
Emmanuel was a former employee of the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo). He was laid off due to his impairment.
