(Kaieteur News) – A Rose Hall, Corentyne family is fortunate to have survived an invasion nearly unscathed after three men, one of whom brandished a gun, descended on their premises on Monday evening.
Reports are that three armed and masked men entered the Bullet Wood Street, Corentyne, Berbice location which accommodates a pair of two-storey homes. One of the buildings houses a grocery shop on the bottom flat. The men only managed to cart off with G$25,000.
Shanie Ramsingh, 69, proprietress of Shanie’s Grocery, Off Licence Liquor Store at Lot 74 Bullet Wood Street, Rose Hall, Corentyne, told Kaieteur News on Thursday that on ‘Mash’ night, she and a customer were casually interacting besides a pool table after she had already closed shop for the day.
At about 9:00pm, she observed the three men proceeding from the right section of the store; they walked past her as they mistook her for a customer.
“They passed me, and the third one, in a blink, he fired a shot in the air. When I turned back and look at them and realize is bandits I just pushed the (shop) door. My neighbor tell me ‘Aunty Shanie, bandits deh inside’. Before he could tell me, I already got in and I bolt the door,” the shopkeeper told this publication.
The ordeal lasted for approximately 15 minutes, she added.
The men scanned the surrounding and was unable to access the shop. They made their way to the next property, where Stephen Ramsingh, Shanie’s nephew, occupied the lower flat. At the time, his son and sister were upstairs with an overseas guest.
The 46-year-old man related to this publication that he was having dinner when the men swarmed his home with a high-power rifle, aggressively making demands. Prior to that, he was unaware of what was transpiring outside, believing the gun blast to be a random squib.
“These men just came in; they just want money and gold from me. I told them straight I don’t have money and gold to give nobody. I’m just a normal worker doing my work,” the Queensway Security Service employee recounted.
Determined, the men pressed with their demands, and the man was dealt several slaps on the back of his head. The men noticed G$25,000 on the cover of a barrel, which they snatched. No other valuables were reported as missing.
Stephen told Kaieteur News that he is thankful that the situation was not worse as he feared for his life and that of his family.
A relative who visited the home at the same time the robbery was in progress, had her vehicle hijacked.
“They run out, grab she out of the car, slap her, took her car, gone,” Shanie told Kaieteur News.
The stolen car – a black Toyota Fielder Wagon – which was abandoned by the trio, has since been recovered by the police.
Shanie disclosed that her store operated for about 50 years, and was only robbed once.
Reflecting on the incident, she lauded the promptness of the police between Whim and Rose Hall in responding, and their courtesy and consistency displayed while tending to the matter.
“I must thank the police for the good job they do, because I know people does bash them and talk a lot of bad things about police, but my incident, and this robbery that happened, in minutes the police arrived and they started to make moves all over. And I must thank the police again. They did a great job,” she expressed.
