(Kaieteur News) – A post-mortem examination (PME) conducted on the body of 52-year-old Ravindra Yudeshwar Bishram has attributed his cause of death to asphyxia and bronchoaspiration (brought on by blood being inhaled into the airway and lungs).
The PME was done on Saturday morning by government pathologist, Dr. Vivekanand Bridgemohan at the New Amsterdam Hospital mortuary in Berbice.
Bishram, who was a patient at the New Amsterdam Psychiatric Hospital for more than a decade, was positively identified by his caretaker Diaram Singh, a male 59-year-old mechanic of Lot 93 Palmyra Village, East Canje Berbice.
The post-mortem examination was witnessed by a team of police headed by an Inspector, and the body was subsequently handed over to the relatives for burial.
Bishram, called ‘Ravi’, lost his life after he was reportedly assaulted by another male patient at the institution last Friday. Police reports have confirmed that the incident occurred at about 19:50 hrs. at the facility involving Bishram and another patient 38-year-old Anthony Tucker of Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice.
Preliminary investigations indicated that at about 19:30 hrs. on Friday while a staff was on duty at the Acute Centre which houses patients, she heard gasping sounds and subsequently discovered Bishram lying in a pool of blood.
He was taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he was admitted to the Accident and Emergency Department. Bishram succumbed to his injuries on Saturday morning while receiving medical treatment, the police said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Tucker, who it is alleged severely assaulted Bishram, was then placed in an isolation room, as investigations continue.
